What is an Oral Health Therapist and Dental Hygienist?

An Oral Health Therapist is a registered dental professional who holds a dual degree in both Dental Therapy and Dental Hygiene and can treat patients of all ages. The role of an Oral Health Therapist includes routine examinations, fillings, hygiene cleans, extraction of teeth, fissure sealants, pulp therapy, taking x-rays, restoring cavities, and oral health education. With extra qualifications, an Oral Health Therapist can also extend their scope to include restoring adult teeth, basic prosthetic work, and some routine orthodontic procedures.

A Dental Hygienist is a registered dental professional who holds either an Advanced Diploma in Dental Hygiene or a Bachelor of Oral Health. Dental Hygienists help to manage routine dental hygiene appointments, periodontal therapy and maintenance, x-rays, and oral hygiene education to patients of all ages.

Both Dental Hygienists and Oral Health Therapists play an important role in the dental team, providing a strong focus on preventative dental care and patient education while working alongside their fellow Dentists.

As part of Platinum Dental’s commitment to better Oral Health, we offer a dedicated dental hygiene department to help our patients achieve successful long term dental health.

We recommend you visit Platinum Dental for regular check-up appointments with our Oral Health Therapist. Our Oral Health Therapist is the resident expert in oral hygiene and oral health and provides regular cleaning to remove the plaque and tartar that accumulates in hard to reach places. She will also help educate you in achieving and maintaining excellent standards of oral health.

These are some of the tasks our Oral Health Therapist will perform:

  • Remove stains and deposits from teeth.
  • Comprehensive risk assessment for dental diseases.
  • Educate children and adults about dental health, oral hygiene, and plaque control.
  • Treatment of gum disease (periodontal therapy).
  • Preventive dental care for all ages (fissure sealants, fluoride, saliva testing, diet counseling, x-rays)
  • Assist in teeth whitening procedures.
  • Take digital scans and impressions for study models.
  • Give local anaesthetic and provide restorative dental procedures.

It is our goal for you to maintain optimal dental health.

Your oral health can also play a significant role in the health of other areas of your body. Research has shown that the bacteria connected to gum disease (periodontal disease) has also been linked to complications in other areas of general health such as:

  • Increase risk of Stroke
  • Increase the risk of heart disease
  • Complications with artificial joints
  • Trouble controlling blood sugar levels in diabetics
  • Pregnancy complications

The team at Platinum Dental want to take care of your dental needs but also allow you to maintain your general health as well. Having regular check-ups and cleans can reduce your risk of these complications and allow you to enjoy a fuller life.

At the forefront of Teeth Cleaning Technology (EMS Airflow)

At Platinum Dental, we only invest in state-of-the-art, cutting edge technology, and we apply that same principle for our Oral Hygiene department. Besides the more traditional methods for cleaning teeth, we also offer our patients EMS Airflow Technology. This advanced machine is the gold standard instrument used to assist with removing stains, plaque, and tartar from teeth. Nothing will clean your teeth better than the EMS Airflow.

The technique uses a mixture of water, air, and cleaning particles to easily remove stains, plaque, and calculus. The water is gently heated for the patients’ comfort allowing for an extremely pleasant experience. This technique is particularly useful in cleaning around bridges, implants, orthodontic braces, or any place the patient finds hard to clean themselves. Come and see why the EMS Airflow has been so well received by all our hygiene patients at Platinum Dental.
