What Are Veneers?

Fix your smile with veneers

Dental veneers are one of the most versatile treatment options available. They can be used to address everything from discoloured teeth, through to fixing chips and cracks. Whether it’s a cosmetic fix you’re after or something a bit more substantial, veneers can help.

What Are Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin layers of material that are applied to teeth to restore their appearance — a little like fake nails but for teeth.

Veneers can be made out of a variety of materials. Porcelain is the most common, as it mimics the look of natural tooth enamel exceptionally well.

Dental composite is a popular option for same-day veneers. They aren’t as long-lasting as porcelain, but they can be applied in a single dental visit and are significantly cheaper. This makes them ideal for special occasions such as weddings.

How Are Veneers Made?

Veneers can be made as either direct or indirect bonding.

Direct bonding veneers are made with dental composite. This is a material that can be applied directly to the tooth and hardened into place with a special curing light. The whole process is very quick and can be done in a single dental appointment.

Indirect bonding is when the veneer is made in a lab and bonded to the tooth later. This is typically the case with porcelain veneers.

The dentist will take an impression of the teeth and send them to a lab. There, the porcelain veneers are manufactured to specification. The dentist then bonds the veneers to the teeth.

This process takes longer, involving at least two visits. Sometimes composite veneers are offered in the meantime while the final veneers are being manufactured.

Teeth Whitening with Veneers

For patients with deeply stained teeth, or very sensitive teeth, dental veneers can be a long-lasting way to whiten teeth without the need for bleaches.

Porcelain veneers are perfect for this. Not only do they mimic the look of enamel, they’re also stain resistant. Patients can select the colour they want, and rest easy knowing they’ll have a bright, healthy looking smile for years to come.

Composite veneers aren’t as stain-resistant, but can be a quick way to whiten teeth for special occasions without bleach.

Reshaping a Smile With Veneers

Veneers can be used to reshape teeth into more desirable forms. This can be used to:

  • Correct teeth that are unusually shaped
  • Reshape teeth to close gaps
  • Reshape teeth to cover misalignments in teeth

Using veneers to correct the appearance of teeth is quicker, cheaper, and more comfortable than orthodontics or crowns.

Restore Damaged Teeth

A common way to use veneers is to restore the front teeth when they become chipped or cracked.

Using veneers in this way not only improves the aesthetics of the smile, but also restores some functionality to the tooth. While you can bit with a chipped tooth, it’s not ideal. Patching it up with a veneer makes it safer and more comfortable to chew on.

Why Fix Your Smile With Veneers?

Our smiles are one of the first things people notice when we meet. Many people are very self-conscious about the look of their teeth and are either reluctant or unwilling to smile.

Dental veneers are a quick way to make substantial changes to the look of our smile in a way that’s minimally invasive, comfortable, and long-lasting.
